Exploring the vastness of space in Bethesda’s latest RPG, Starfield, can be quite a daunting task especially when you are out on your own. Fortunately, you have the option of teaming up with other people.
Companions are optional teammates you can take along your journeys in Starfield. Not only do they provide someone for you to talk to and interact with, but each of them also brings their unique set of skills and traits to the table – making your missions and journeys much more convenient.
One of the companions you will eventually run into is Rafael Aguerro. Rafael Aguerro is an engineer at Nishina Research Station. He had been presumed dead for a long time because of an experimental work performed on an artifact in the research station.
This resulted in Rafael being completely warped into an alternate reality. And this reality is different from the one he knows. That’s because everyone is dead, and violent creatures have infested his lab.

How to Recruit Rafael Aguerro
Getting the chance to recruit Rafael Aguerro comes in the final parts of the main story. You have to complete a mission called ‘Entangled‘ that takes place on Freya III in the Freya system.
In summary, you will get a distress call from Rafael from the Nishina facility itself. After going through several objectives, you realize that Rafael is trapped in an alternate reality.
You will then be given a control device to manually teleport between the two realities. After jumping between the two realities and defeating a number of enemies, you will have the option to either save Rafael by shutting down the terminals and the experiment or to sacrifice Rafael and save the rest of the people in the lab by shutting down the terminals in the normal world. The choice is up to you.
However, since you want to recruit Rafael as a companion, you must save Rafael by shutting down the terminals in the alternate reality and letting the rest of the people in the lab die in the normal reality.
After you save Rafael, he will follow you back to your ship. Take him to Atlantis and visit him in the Viewport Bar. There, you can recruit him as a companion.
Can You Romance Rafael Aguerro?
No, Rafael Aguerro is not an option for romance in Starfield.

Since Rafael has two stars in Starship Engineering, assigning him there is the best utilization of his strengths. Rafael won’t nearly be as efficient in constructing or managing outposts as his expertise on these matters is at surface level, at best.
