The element of surprise that NetherRealm pulled came at the very end of the campaign. And with it, NetherRealm Studios has made sure the franchise has enough routes to explore in the future.
The ending and epilogue of Mortal Kombat 1 have boggled our minds. We have been trying to connect the dots with MK11 Aftermath, but it has only left us even more bewildered. Parallel timelines are the only answer to the questions regarding the ending of Mortal Kombat 1. Without further ado, let us explain to you the ending and epilogue in Mortal Kombat 1.
Ending and Epilogue Explained
Starting the game, you must have thought the Earthrealm and Outworld were finally at peace, and you’ll only be fighting at champion tournaments. However, the path for a greater narrative was already laid during the ending of the previous game, Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath.
During the ending of MK11, the possibility of both Shang Tsung and Liu Kang winning the fight to get Kronika’s Hourglass created a parallel timeline. It broke the flow of time and made it possible for both Shang Tsung and Liu Kang to be the winners in their separate universes. So, both made their own timelines, where they became the Time Keepers. And it was only a matter of time until evil Shang Tsung made his return.
At the end of Mortal Kombat 1, Shang Tsung teams up with his universe’s Kitana, Mileena, Reptile, Nitara, and Baraka and plots a plan to take over Liu Kang’s timeline and annihilate his universe by destroying his hourglass. In answer, Liu Kang calls his timeline’s allies for help to face Shang Tsung’s army.
Liu Kang and Shang Tsung’s army face off at an epic battle at The Pyramid, which also turns out to be a superhero-styled multiversal war. At the end of the eventful battle, Shang Tsung and his army are defeated. Liu Kang manages to destroy Titan Shang Tsung’s timeline, restore Earthrealm and Outworld, and reinstate himself as the champion of Earthrealm.
In the cutscene epilogue, we see two segments, one showing Havik resenting the battle being short-lived and hinting at something big coming, even bigger than this faceoff. In another cutscene, we see Earthrealm’s victors reminiscing about the Pyramid battle and how Earthrealm is finally back to its peaceful state.
