In Minecraft, each core mechanic like building, creating redstone machines, hunting, and mining has a lot of depth to it. The tools and processes for each of them can take quite a while to completely get the hang of. Even after you learn everything there is to know, chances are, the only limiting factor you’ll face anytime soon is your own creativity!
Out of the numerous items and blocks in Minecraft, one unique block is the Note Block. You can use the Note Blocks in Minecraft to play a specific musical note when triggered by a redstone signal. So, if you want to know everything there is to know about this fun block then you came to the right place.
How To Use Note Blocks in Minecraft
As mentioned, Note Blocks are blocks that will play a single musical note either when they’re hit or when there is a redstone signal. Oh and here is the crafting recipe for the Note Block if you didn’t know.
How to Tune a Note Block
To start off, try clicking on the Note Block to produce a sound. Notice that every time the note block is hit, the sound will go up by a half step in pitch. In total, there are 2 octaves of notes, or 24 notes in total that a Note Block can play.
So if you want a specific musical note, keep clicking on it to adjust the sound. Once you found your desired note, don’t click on it again. Additionally, the Note Blocks display a musical notation of a certain color each time it plays a note. This makes it easier to coordinate notes across a number of Note Blocks.
How to Change the Sound Type of a Note Block
The type of sound a Note Block makes can be changed depending on the type of block the Note Block is placed above. For example, if you place a Note Block above a block of gold, the Note Block will play a Bell. Therefore, here are all the instruments you can get the Note Block to play and what blocks you need to place underneath.
- Wood – Bass Guitar
- Sand or Gravel – Snare Drum
- Glass – Clicks and sticks
- Stones – Bass drum
- Gold Block – Bells
- Clay – Flute
- Packed Ice – Chimes
- Wool – Guitar
- Bone Block – Xylophone
- Iron Block – Vibraphone
- Soul Sand – Cow bell
- Pumpkin – Didgeridoo
- Emerald Block – Bit (Square wave)
- Hay Bale – Banjo
- Glowstone – Electric Piano
- Any other block – Harp/Piano
How To Activate The Note Block With Redstone
As we mentioned before, redstone signals activate the Note Blocks. However, unlike when you play the notes by clicking on it, a redstone signal triggered Note Block will not change its tone no matter how many times it is played.
So the basic idea is to first tune the Note Block by clicking it and once you find the right note, connect it to a redstone signal to keep playing that same note over and over. You can use redstone repeaters and redstone torches to get a rhythm going pretty easily across several Note Blocks.
