Because each death is punishing (especially in Hardcore Mode), it is crucial to take necessary steps to not succumb to fall damage. Thankfully, there are various methods to prevent death from fall damage, which incorporates usage of different blocks and items.
So, whether you’re exploring mountains, or trying to descend elaborate bases, this guide has many techniques to shield you from the pesky fall damage.
Placing Blocks – Water, Cobwebs, Hay Bales, Slime Blocks, and More
Perhaps the most well-known technique to prevent fall damage, the Water Bucket trick has been a staple in the Minecraft community for years. It prevents fall damage entirely but is difficult to execute.
To pull it off, have a Water Bucket equipped when you’re falling. Then, place some water just before you’re about to hit the ground. If timed right, you will take zero fall damage.
The same can be done by placing the following blocks:
- Hay Bales.
- This will reduce fall damage by 80%, so you can still die using this method if you have low health.
- Cobwebs
- Prevents fall damage entirely but will slow down your movement speed significantly.
- Slime Blocks
- Prevents fall damage entirely and causes you to bounce.
- Bed
- Reduces fall damage by 50% and causes you to bounce.
- Scaffolding
- Prevents fall damage entirely but only if you land on it crouced.
Potion of Slow Falling
Consuming the Potion of Slow Falling reduces the speed at which you fall, as you might have guessed, resulting in zero fall damage. To make a Potion of Slow Falling you’ll need to make use of a Brewing Stand and the following resources:
- 1 water bottle.
- 1 nether wart.
- 1 phantom membrane.
This will make a Potion that 1:30 minutes, which can be enhanced using 1 Redstone Dust to make one that lasts 4 minutes.
Feather Falling Boots
Potions, discussed previously, only last a short time. For a wider coverage, you can enchant your armor. Feather Falling is an enchantment exclusive to boots which reduces fall damage for up to 48%. Combining Feather Falling IV along with Protection IV and Protection II will reduce your fall damage to 80%.
To get Feather Falling Boots, you’ll need an Enchanted Book containing the enchantment and any pair of boots which you can then enchant at an Anvil.
Ender Pearls
Ender Pearls can be used to teleport wherever you throw one, making it useful in escaping fall damage in a pinch. However, each use of an Ender Pearl takes off 2.5 hearts of your health, so you will still take damage. Additionally, it is somewhat tricky to obtain Ender Pearls, as you have to kill Endermen, who have a 50% chance of dropping the item.
Boats
Boats can be used to completely negate fall damage, weird as it may sound. Simply use the boat to row off a cliff and continue rowing as you fall. If you do not row when you hit the ground you will take fall damage.
Furthermore, boats can carry two people, so if you have a friend with you, he can hop on to save himself from fall damage too.
However, boats can break if you land on fire, lava, or cactus, so watch where you land when using this method.
To make a Boat, use the crafting table and assemble 5 wood planks in a U-shape.
