As the time approaches for Garena to bid farewell, here is how you link your account to the new Riot SEA server for League of Legends.

Riot SEA is becoming an official server for League of Legends, as it was announced a while back. The addition of the SEA server to the official server list has been long advocated by players for years. Now that it’s finally happening, some players rejoice as SEA is coming under the official server umbrella.

However, it will be a process of transition. Riot has promised welcome events and such for all the players transitioning over. The server promises to be a new start for players in a newer yet familiar setting. Our progression in level and owned cosmetics and such will be carried over.

As the server launches in early January 2023, we await the experience Riot is setting up for us. Before that, Riot has set up a system to transfer our Garena account progress and bind it to a Riot Account. Here is a guide to how you do it and what is being transferred.

The Migration Process

In order to start the process of migrating your Garena account, you need to check the eligibility of your Garena and Riot accounts and then start the migration.

Checking Accounts for Eligibility

The eligibility checks determine whether your accounts are applicable for a migration. Both accounts need to be checked for something. Here are the following checks.

Garena Account With Progression

In order to transfer your account, you need to have some progression in Garena for League of Legends. If there is no progress, there is really nothing to transfer. Progression includes champion mastery, ranked tier, etc. This is the first check before you start the migrating process.

Checking Region and Shard for a Garena League Account

The first thing to do is to check which region your Garena League Account is in. To do that, follow the steps below:

  1. Open your Garena client
  2. Go to the settings on the top right of the client, as shown in the image on the right.
  3. Go to account management, where you can see your region and location. It is as shown below.

In the picture above, there are two important pieces of information. One is the Region the account is in; the other is where your IP is listed as. For the above image, the account region is Singapore, which will be considered the shard when you transfer to a Riot account. Your region based on IP will be considered as your region.

It is worth noting that shard and region are different, and the shard is the main criteria being checked for eligibility for account transfers.

Checking Region and Shard of an Existing Riot Account

Next, the Riot account you want to use for migration needs to be checked. If it is an existing Riot account, it has to match the shard your Garena account is in. As mentioned above in the example, The shard for both Garena and Riot accounts needs to be Singapore. Newly created Riot Accounts for the migration process will automatically switch to the shard in question.

To check your Riot account’s region, follow the steps below. To clarify, this process is only required if you have an existing Riot account you want to transfer to.

  1. Log in to the League Account you wish to link to.
  2. Go to the Personal Information tab on the left of the page.
  3. The shard of the account is based on your region of residence when you created the account. The image below shows an example of what the personal information tab looks like.

If your existing Riot account Region does not match the shard of the Garena Account, it is not eligible for transfer. Newly created accounts will circumvent this process, so you can create a new account in order to carry over your progress from the Garena Account.

Riot has not allowed transferring to or from the SEA account for the near future, so your best bet would be to create a new Riot account.

After you have determined the eligibility of your accounts or created a new Riot account for the migration process, you are good to follow the steps below. One important thing to note is, Account Linking is not reversible, so think twice before you confirm.

  1. Make sure to check the eligibility.
  2. Go to the Linking Account Microsite.
  3. Click the start linking button on the microsite. This will open up a page to log into your Garena account.
  4. Login to your Garena Account.
  5. After logging in, the page will ask you to log in to your desired Riot Account or create a new one.
  6. Follow the prompts to confirm the link.
  7. Ultimately, the page will ask for confirmation to start the linking process. Once linked, the accounts are bound. It will show what changes will be made.
  8. If everything looks good, press Link Accounts to link the accounts.

With that, your accounts are linked and are now ready for January’s release.

What Will Be Migrated?

It’s another conversation to ask about what will be transferred to the account. Riot has created a whole page to show what will and will not be transferred. In short, your cosmetics, account name, masteries, etc., will be transferred, while MMR and ELO will not. It will be a clean start for most players. Thus all sorts of Mission and Battle Pass Progress and Ranked MMR will be reset.
