Hogwarts Legacy has beaten The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to become the best-selling game of 2023.
Hogwarts Legacy is officially the best-selling game of 2023, narrowly beating out The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The action role-playing title developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games had the biggest release of the previous year, officially announced by the publisher.
On the other hand, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released by Nintendo and is the direct sequel to 2017’s Breath of the Wild. Tears of the Kingdom gained critical acclaim and became the best-selling Nintendo game of 2023.

Hogwarts Legacy Was The Biggest Game of 2023
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad announced that Hogwarts Legacy sold more than 22 million copies in 2023. Furthermore, the game sold almost 2 million units during the holiday season in December. After revealing the sales number, Haddad stated that Hogwarts Legacy was “the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide.“
Nintendo previously stated that Tears of the Kingdom broke the sales figure for Nintendo during its launch week. However, Nintendo did not reveal any specific number of how many copies the game sold in 2023 entirely. After the company’s financial results were made public, it was revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold 20.28 million copies in 2023.
After Nintendo’s 2023 financial results, it was concluded that Hogwarts Legacy is officially the year’s best-selling game after selling 1.8 million more copies than Tears of the Kingdom. It’s worth mentioning that Hogwarts Legacy was released in February 2023, and Tears of the Kingdom was released in May 2023 on Nintendo Switch.
For the entire year 2023, Hogwarts Legacy topped the charts worldwide. The game was released in phases – first on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC, then on the Nintendo Switch and previous generation consoles. After the game was released on the previous generation consoles, it helped the game sell a lot more copies.
