If you were holding out hope that Rockstar would quietly slip a Grand Theft Auto 6 disc onto store shelves shortly after launch, you might want to sit down for this one. According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, a physical disc version of GTA 6 simply is not happening. Not in November, not in December, and not in the vague stretch of time fans were clinging to.

The Report That Shut the Door on a GTA 6 Disc

The Hollywood Reporter cited a source with knowledge of Rockstar’s plans, and the wording leaves very little room for wishful thinking. The source said there are currently no plans to print GTA 6 discs at all, described as “not at launch, and not months after.”

THR also confirmed the authenticity of the Rockstar Support email that kicked off all the speculation in the first place, so this is not a case of a fake screenshot doing numbers online. The email was real. The problem was how everyone read it.

How the Disc Rumor Got Started

Here is where it gets a little messy. Earlier in the week, a worried fan reached out to Rockstar Support asking about a physical copy, and the reply told them they would be able to acquire a physical copy “during the following months.” Naturally, the internet ran with it. To most people, that sounded like a confirmation that a real disc was on the way sometime after the November 19, 2026, launch.

It was a reasonable assumption. It was also wrong, at least according to THR’s source.

What Rockstar Actually Meant by “Physical Copy”

The phrase “physical copy” in that support email was never pointing to a disc. It was referring to the same code-in-a-box version Rockstar already announced, which is the boxed physical edition that contains a download code rather than any actual game on a disc. The “following months” line that everyone latched onto was reportedly just a clunky reference to the period following the recent announcement and the start of pre-orders, not the months after the game ships.

So the support agent was basically saying you can pre-order the boxed physical edition over the coming months. That is it. No disc was ever part of the conversation, even if the wording made it sound like one was.

A Digital-Only Future

A big chunk of the panic came from a single viral exchange with Rockstar Support that spread across social media before anyone slowed down to actually parse it. The main takeaway people shared was that a disc launch had been “delayed,” when in reality, Rockstar never confirmed a disc at any point. All they confirmed was a physical version, and that physical version has always been the code in a case.

This also lines up with the debunking of a separate claim from a Polish insider who suggested a disc edition would arrive in December. THR’s source shut that down too, noting there are no plans to press discs in December or otherwise.

The short version is that GTA 6 is effectively going digital only. Yes, you can still buy a box and put it on your shelf, but you will be downloading the game regardless, and preloading reportedly kicks off on November 12 ahead of the November 19 release.
