A live-service Call of Duty: Zombies title was being worked on at Raven Software before another studio took the IP back, canceling the entire project.

Raven Software once worked on a live-service Call of Duty: Zombies before the project was canceled, according to ex-Raven Software lead designer Michael Gummelt. The entire development was canceled when the Activision studio that ‘owned’ that part of the Call of Duty IP wanted it back.

Gummelt did not mention the studio’s name, but Eurogamer speculated he was referring to Treyarch, who originally created the Zombie mode for Call of Duty: World at War in 2008.

Live Service CoD Zombies was Reportedly Cancelled

MP1ST first spotted the news on Michael Gummelt’s LinkedIn page, where it was mentioned that he was a Lead Designer for an unreleased Call of Duty: Zombies live-service game. The description stated that it was an ambitious project, and Gummelt worked on it for eight months. Then, the Activision studio that owned the IP wanted the project back, ultimately canceling the title.

The studio has been developing Call of Duty games for over a decade and attempted to create something original. According to former employee Michael Gummelt’s LinkedIn profile, Raven Software worked on two Call of Duty titles and wanted to create a spin-off of Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Zombie mode. But Treyarch supposedly stepped in and wanted to take IP back.

Raven Software has been a major supporting studio for Activision for the past ten years, helping to co-develop and support several of the most recent Call of Duty games. However, Raven Software has had a long history of creating games since the 1990s, and they have been releasing their own games.

In 2012, Raven Software collaborated with Infinity Ward for Call of Duty: Ghosts, which was released in May 2013. The company later developed Call of Duty: Online and remade Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. Raven Software collaborated with Infinity Ward again in 2020 to develop and release the widely popular battle royale title Call of Duty: Warzone.
