Bungie has detailed its Destiny 2 unvaulting plans, with Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind leading the first wave of returning content. Strikes, raids, raid lairs, and Menagerie are also part of the plan, giving Guardians plenty of familiar adventures to revisit.

Thereโ€™s still a substantial wait ahead, though. The project is currently in pre-production, and Bungie expects the full production phase to take around 12 months once it begins.

In brief:

  • The first unvaulting pass will be available to all players and includes four campaigns, associated strikes, raids, raid lairs, and Menagerie.
  • Free-roam destinations, additional seasonal activities, PvP maps, and raid weapon updates remain stretch goals.
  • Production is targeted for February 2027, while the release date remains unconfirmed.
  • Bungie plans its next major Destiny update for February 2027.

Which Destiny 2 Content Is Being Unvaulted?

In its October 2026 community update, Bungie outlined the initial scope of the project. The priority is restoring the campaign lineup and bringing back activity content from vaulted releases.

Hereโ€™s what Bungie is targeting for the first pass:

  • Campaigns: Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind.
  • Strikes: Strikes from those releases.
  • Raids and raid lairs: Content from those same releases.
  • Menagerie: The activity will return with reprised rewards.

Bungie says this first pass will be available to all players. Menagerie gets a specific mention, with the studio acknowledging years of requests for its return.

Head of Product Josh Deane also addressed why unvaulting comes first. He said removing essential content fragmented Destiny 2 and damaged the studioโ€™s relationship with its community. Restoring that content is part of Bungieโ€™s effort to rebuild trust while developing the franchiseโ€™s future.

Destinations and More Seasonal Activities Are Stretch Goals

The campaign plans come with an important limit: bringing back those missions doesnโ€™t guarantee every surrounding destination will return as a fully explorable space at launch.

Bungie is investigating the following as stretch goals for launch or afterward:

  • Free-roam destinations, including public events, Lost Sectors, and Escalation Protocol.
  • Seasonal activities spanning Sundial from Season 9 through The Coil from Season 23.
  • Weapon updates for returning raids and raid lairs.
  • PvP maps.

The studio also acknowledges that legacy raids need a worthwhile reward chase, although it may be unable to address that upfront. Players will have to wait for later updates to learn which extras make the cut.

What Currently Has No Path to Return?

Bungie has identified several areas that currently lack a path to restoration or an update. These include seasonal story missions, seasonal hubs such as the Eliksni Quarter, the Kellโ€™s Grave Gambit map, and an updated New Light experience.

According to the studio, technical challenges and development priorities limit what it can take on while building Destinyโ€™s future. These items sit outside the current plan.

When Will Destiny 2 Unvaulting Release?

Destiny 2 unvaulting has no confirmed release date. Bungieโ€™s progress graphic lists the release as TBD.

Initial scoping began in June 2026, followed by validation in September. The team is now testing its process for porting legacy content and checking that the results meet its quality standards.

So, that pre-production stage is expected to run until roughly January or February 2027. The graphic targets February 2027 for production, which Bungie estimates will require about 12 months to complete the porting work.

And that schedule suggests porting could finish around early 2028 if everything stays on track. This is an estimate based on the development timeline, rather than an announced release window.

Bungie Plans More Destiny News for February 2027

Unvaulting is one part of a broader plan. Bungie also teased a Destiny 2 โ€œCelebrationโ€ with new updates beyond Monument of Triumph, a project called Destiny โ€œLegacy,โ€ and a third redacted initiative.

More information and new progress bars for Celebration and Legacy are expected in February 2027. Their exact scope remains under wraps.

Bungie also ruled out a Destiny announcement at this yearโ€™s The Game Awards. For now, the next major checkpoint is February, with unvaulting progress updates planned along the way.
