With the Udyr rework released in patch 12.16, let’s find out what his best builds are.
Udyr, The Spirit Walker, released in 2009, is one of the oldest champions in League of Legends. Despite the fact, The Spirit Walker hasn’t seen many changes to his kit or model since his release in season one. However, to put him in line with the current League of Legends champions, Riot promised a full VGU update for Udyr.
The VGU update for Udyr was released in Patch 12.16, and the rework fixed most of the problems Udyr had. In addition, he received new models for all his skins and base skin, new voice lines, and updated abilities.
Udyr’s pre-rework abilities were quite simple and easy to master, but his current abilities are, at their core, still quite simple while having a layer of skill expression to them. Furthermore, the awakened abilities he received in the update are game changers as they can have different uses depending on the situation.

Along with the new abilities came new builds. So, here we will review the best builds for reworked Udyr in League of Legends season 12.
Before we look at the best Udyr builds, let’s find out what his new abilities do.
Passive – Bridge Between
Awakened Spirit: Udyr has no ultimate ability but four basic abilities. Each ability grants a Stance that empowers his next two basic attacks and grants an additional effect. Switching Stances will replace the empowered attacks from the previous Stance and incurs a 1.5-second global cooldown on his other abilities. Periodically, after Udyr enters a Stance, he can recast the ability after 0.25 seconds to enter an Awakened Stance, refreshing the cooldown and the Stance with bonus effects.
Monk Training: After casting an ability, Udyr empowers his next two basic attacks within 4 seconds to gain a 30% bonus attack speed and refund 5% of Awaken’stotal cooldown.
Q – Wilding Claw
Udyr enters Claw Stance, empowering his next two basic attacks to maul the target, dealing bonus physical damage. Additionally, Udyr gains bonus attack speed and deals bonus damage on hit.
Awaken: Udyr gains even more attack speed and his next two attacks chain lightning off the target, bouncing up to 6 times. Lightning can strike the same target multiple times, dealing heavy damage to isolated targets.
W – Iron Mantle
Mantle Stance: Udyr enters Mantle Stance, empowering his next two basic attacks to gain 15% life steal and heal him. Additionally, Udyr gains a shield for 4 seconds.
Awaken: Udyr gains a bigger shield, his next two attacks heal even more, and he restores a percentage of his max health over the next few seconds.
E – Blazing Stampede
Stampede Stance: Udyr enters Stampede Stance, empowering his basic attacks to have an uncancellable windup and pounce on the target to stun them for 0.75 seconds. The stun cannot affect the same target more than once every few seconds. Additionally, Udyr becomes ghosted and gains movement speed for four seconds.
Awaken: Gain more movement speed and immunity to immobilizing effects for a few seconds.
R – Wingborne Storm
Storm Stance: Udyr enters Storm Stance, empowering his next two basic attacks to deal bonus magic damage to nearby enemies. Udyr summons a blizzard around himself for 4 seconds that deals magic damage every 0.5 seconds to nearby enemies and slows them.
Awaken: Empower and unleash the Storm, causing it to track enemies and deal additional damage.
Which Ability Should You Max First?
Now that we know what Udyr’s abilities do, let’s look at what abilities should be leveled up and maxed first.
The first ability you should level up is the Q – Wilding Claw, as it provides attack speed and bonus attack damage which is optimal for jungle and minion clear speed. Allocating just one point to this ability should be enough, as more than one point does not provide many benefits.
The second ability you should level up is the R – Wingborne Storm, which should also be the first ability to be maxed. Wingborne Storm provides wave clear and does the most damage out of all his abilities.
The third ability you should level up is the E – Blazing Stampede; the ability provides a brief stun and will help with level three ganking. It would be best if you maxed this ability third.
The last ability you should level up is the W – Iron Mantle; it provides a shield and lifesteal. Iron Mantle has great scaling and should be maxed second for more sustain.
Conqueror: Udyr synergizes with Conqueror quite well as he has to constantly use abilities and auto attacks to fight efficiently. Conqueror also provides extra damage and omnivamp; these are stats quite appreciated by fighter champions like Udyr. Therefore, it is the most optimal choice for Udyr.
Triumph: As a champion who excels at skirmishing, sustain is important. Triumph and Udyrs ability W – Iron Mantle provide the sustenance for him to survive in a longer team fight.
Legend: Tenacity: Udyr has a hard time against crowd-control abilities as it hampers his ability to reach the enemy. As a result, the tenacity provided by Legend: Tenacity is quite important for crowd-control reduction.
Last Stand: Udyr fights in the front lines most of the time and is usually in low health during team fights. Last Stand is a great choice for Udyr to maximize his damage output when he is in low health.
Celerity: Celerity provides percent movement speed and is excellent for ganks and escaping.
Waterwalking: Waterwalking also provides movement speed in the river and stacks with Celerity.
+10 percent attack speed, +9 adaptive force, and +6 armor is optimal for early jungle clear and dueling.
Now that we have a brief overview of Udyrs ability and rune choices, let us look at his optimal builds.
Best Starting Item
Hailblade is a great option for Udyr as the chilling smite provided by the Hailblade helps Udyr to catch up to enemies. Emberknife is also viable if the enemy team has a lot of melee champions that Udyr can duel.
As for the top lane, Dorans Shield is a great starter item for most matchups. Additionally, Dorans Blade and Corrupting Potion are viable in matchups that Udyr can dominate.
Best Mythic Item
In terms of mythic items, the mythic tank items are the best option for Udyr. These items provide damage and resistances, which are quite suitable for Udyr’s bruiser-esque playstyle.
All three Tank-Mythic items are currently viable on Udyr, but the most optimal option is the Sunfire Aegis, as Sunfire Aegis provides the most damage out of all three tank mythic items.
Turbo Chemtank is good against enemies with high mobility, and Forstfire Gauntlet is good if you require more HP.
Demonic Embrace is one of the most important items for Udyr. The item provides max health magic damage and synergizes quite well with Sunfire Aegis. In addition, Udyr’s R – Wingborne Storm, Sunfire Aegis, and Demonic Embrace stack to offer tons of damage and help Udyr duel most enemies.
Dead Man’s Plate and Force of Nature are Udyr’s go-to tank items. Dead Man’s Plate provides armor and movement speed, while Force of Nature provides magic resistance and speed. These are great options for reaching priority targets.
Mercury’s Treads should be the boots of choice for Udyr as it provides 30 percent tenacity. Plated Steelcaps are also good options against auto attackers.
The final build for Udyr should look something like this: Sunfire Aegis > Mercury’s Treads > Demonic Embrace > Situational items like Dead Man’s Plate, Force of Nature, and Frozen Heart.
Sunfire Aegis should be bought first, following up with a Mercury’s Treads. The third item you should build towards is Demonic Embrace. After that, depending on the situation, you could start building the tank items.
