The announcement was made by Sony Interactive Entertainment’s President and CEO, Jim Ryan.
In the PlayStation blog post published by Sony, the company has seemingly retracted their decision of shutting down PlayStation store services for PS4 and PSVita. Meaning PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita owners will continue to be able to purchase games for their consoles on the PlayStation store.
The decision of shutting down PlayStation Store services for PS3 and PS Vita had received a huge backlash from Sony’s customers. Here’s what Sony Interactive Entertainment’s President and CEO, Jim Ryan had to say about retracting their decision:
“When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.”
However, PSP Commerce functionality is still set to close down on July 2, 2021, as scheduled. Originally, PSP and PS3 PlayStation Store services were supposed to shut down on July 2, 2021, and the PS Vita store on August 27, 2021.
Shutting down of PlayStation stores would have meant for players to not be able to purchase games and DLCs digitally for PS3, PS Vita. The players would still be able to install games through their physical copies. But thanks to players expressing their frustration with the decision on social media platforms, they were able to change Sony’s mind.
However, as consoles progress toward new generations, all console manufacturers continue to drop their focus on older consoles, gradually stopping support. Therefore there is no actual guarantee of Sony’s decision of continuing purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita is permanent. For all we know, they have simply postponed their original plan.
