After only weeks of declining Microsoft’s $10 Billion acquisition offer, Discord has seemingly teamed up with Sony.
This unusual timing of the partnership definitely came as a surprise to everyone. A few weeks ago Discord declined the acquisition offer from Sony’s rival, Microsoft. Even though the company was willing to pay over 8 billion dollars more than Discord’s actual net worth.
Discord is the biggest chat platform dedicated to gamers, with over 140 million monthly active users using the platform. However, ever since the start of the pandemic, the user base of the popular social media app has vastly diversified. Now, the chat and streaming site is used for all kinds of purposes including watching movies with friends, hosting book clubs, group studies, and more.
The announcement was made by the President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan on SIE’s official blog post. Ryan has confirmed that their shared goal is to connect the two platforms to enhance the user experience of playing games while connecting with friends. However, there is still work left to be done. This is what he had to say about the partnership:
“Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”
He further added:
“To bring these experiences to life for our players, Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round. From our very first conversation with co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, I was inspired by their lifelong love for gaming and our teams’ shared passion to help bring friends and communities together in new ways. Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.”
So, what does this partnership mean for Discord and PlayStation users? Well, starting early next year, PlayStation users will be able to integrate discord to their PlayStation Network to chat, communicate and connect with other players while playing games together.
