Unlike a lot of other multiplayer games, you can’t change your in-game name in Overwatch as easily or as frequently. Here, we will be going through the steps to follow if you want to change your name in Overwatch for both PC and Console.
Your name appears in Overwatch as the name you have set in the Blizzard client. Known as the “BattleTag,” it consists of a name followed by a unique number or Tag. Due to the implementation of this system, there is no scope of “username has already been taken” and multiple players can have the same name if they wish to. This is possible due to the unique non-customizable 5-digit tag number that is automatically assigned at the end of each BattleTag.
You can set the name of your BattleTag while first opening your account. Your tag number, though, will be automatically assigned to you. This is different from titles like VALORANT and CS:GO wherein the former, the tag number is customizable as well as the name, and in the latter, there is almost infinite freedom as it uses your steam name which is easily changeable.
You are allowed to change your name for free once, and after that, you have to pay to change your name. This is quite strict compared to Riot where although there is no full degree of freedom, you can still change your name once every 30 days for free. Also, during a limited time from October 22nd through November 5th, players who already used up their free name change had the option to request another name change for free.
How to change your name in Overwatch

So finally those of you with names like xXxShadOwKilleRxXx or who entered your basic IRL name while creating your Blizzard account can finally change them. Bear in mind that after creating your Blizzard account, you get 1 free name change (as depicted below). After that, you have to purchase a BattleTag change which will cost $10 per name change.
