New to Genshin Impact and don’t know where to start? Here are some useful tips and tricks compiled into a beginners guide.
If you are into gaming, you probably heard the name Genshin Impact already. The free-to-play Action-RPG skyrocketed in popularity over the last year, and more people are getting in on it. The widely popular game by Chinese developer Mihoyo was released in 2020 on every major gaming platform, including Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, and Playstation.
Genshin Impact takes place in the world of Teyvat, a seven-nation fictional world. The nations are Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, Sumeru, Fontaine, Natlan, and Snezhnaya; a different Archon rules each. Then there is the mysterious floating island Celestia which can be seen from anywhere on the map as the home to gods and mortals who have ascended to godhood through incredible, heroic feats.
You get to start as the Traveler (male or female depending on player choice), separated from their twin, and got trapped in Teyvat. Paimon joins the player as they embark on the quest to find their lost sibling. The male Traveler is named Aether, and the female Traveler is named Lumine.
To make your journey easier into Teyvat, we have created this Genshin Impact guide with some important tips and tricks to help you progress, especially if you are just starting or are planning to dive into the game finally.
Genshin Beginner Guide:
Select Your Traveler
At the very beginning of the game, you will be asked to choose which Twin to play. Your options will be either male or female, and you will be given the option to name your character. This name will be used in dialogue text, but you will be referred to as ‘traveler‘ in the voice lines. Both the twins have the same abilities so pick the one you like.
The twin is your main player character, but as the game progress, you can change them later when you get more characters. Both twins are sword users and have the Anemo element at the start.
The main character is not that strong in-game, so we don’t recommend spending a lot of resources on them.
Adventure Rank
Adventure Rank is an important part of leveling up in Genshin Impact. It determines what you can do in certain quests and what is available in-game. You can increase your adventure rank by doing Archon quests, World quests, exploring the world, opening chests, defeating the bosses, and claiming their rewards using Resin. Currently, Adventure Rank 60 is the highest. The higher your Adventure Rank, the more EXP required to reach the next level.
Upon reaching a certain Adventure Rank and completing the ascension quest, the World Level will also increase by doing ascension domain in-game. Increasing the World Level will increase the level of enemies in the environment, making them more challenging but dropping more loot.
- World Level 1 – Adventure Rank 20; World Level automatically increases to 1 once you reach Rank 20 and visit the Adventurers’ Guild.
- World Level 2 – Adventure Rank 25; World Level is increased after finishing the Ascension Quest in your quest-log and doing the ascension domain.
- World Level 3 – Adventure Rank 30; World Level automatically increases to 3 once your reach Rank 30 and visit the Adventurers’ Guild.
Daily Commissions and Adventurers’ Guild:
When you log into Genshin Impact every day, you will get four daily commissions. They are short daily quests that reward you with Adventure EXP, Companionship EXP, Primogems, Mora, and Enhancement Ore. Players can unlock Daily Commissions when they reach Adventure Rank 12.
After completing all four daily commission quests, you can talk to Katheryne from Adventurers’ Guild and receive more EXP and 20 Primogem. So, it is crucial to complete your daily commissions because this is one of the main ways to obtain Primogems and get more EXP every day.
Daily commissions reset every day at 4 AM server time.
How to Increase Stamina
You might notice that your stamina is running out pretty quickly if you just started the game. In Genshin Impact, stamina is required for combat, running, gliding, even climbing. Stamina can be increased by collecting all the Anemoculus and Geoculus, then offering them to the Statues of the Seven, increasing your stamina and the level of the Statue. There are 65 Anemoculus and 131 Geoculus spread throughout Mondstadt and Liyue.
The fastest way to collect Anemoculus and Geoculus is to look them up in the Teyvat Interactive Map and mark them on your in-game map. This is the quickest way to collect them and level up your stamina in-game. Once you collect an Anemoculus or Geoculus, you can remove the mark from the map so you can keep track of what is collected.
Characters and Weapons
Genshin Impact uses Gacha mechanics for players to obtain characters and weapons. The way they work is you can spend in-game currency, Primogems, on characters, loot, and weapons.
The game has 5-star characters(highest rarity), which can be obtained by rolling on the limited-time character banners or the standard banner. Players can roll for the characters they like.
If you are starting in Genshin Impact, 5-star characters and weapons might not be that necessary because there are a lot of good 4-star characters you will get in the beginning. You will get 4-star characters such as Kaeya, Lisa, and Amber early on in the game, Noelle from the Novice character banner, and Barbara, a Hydro healer character, when you reach Adventure Rank 18.
Players can also get the Pyro polearm character Xiangling from Spiral Abyss. You need to beat Floor 3 Chamber 3 in Spiral Abyss to obtain Xiangling for free. There is no star requirement; you need to complete the final chamber of floor 3.
You can play with a max of 4 characters in your party. Choose the team you find flexible and easy to play with and stick with the team.
We don’t recommend pulling for weapons from the weapon banner early on because you can get free weapons after completing different quests. However, you can also craft weapons if you get prototype weapon billets from defeating the weekly bosses.
Unlock the Teleporters
When you interact with a Statue of The Seven, a certain map area will be revealed, and you can find teleporters to fast travel inside the map. We advise activating the teleporters as you explore the map.
Elements and Combat
Elements are the core mechanism of Genshin Impact’s combat system. Each character wields a vision that grants them elemental powers. You will need characters of different elements to explore as there are puzzles requiring you to use certain characters’ elemental skills.
Elemental reactions occur when an enemy is simultaneously afflicted with two or more elements. Enemies will take more damage or have a lower defense depending on the elemental reactions.
Character Priority
In Genshin Impact, characters are categorized into three different roles; DPS, Sub DPS, and Support. A party mainly consists of a Main DPS, 2 Sub-DPS, and a Support. The sub-DPS characters will focus on elemental reactions for your Main DPS while the support character can buff or heal your entire party.
You don’t have to follow this party structure and set up your party however you see fit.
Focus on leveling up your main characters first instead of leveling up multiple characters simultaneously. Leveling up a character will make your character strong, and it is important because the enemies will be stronger as the world level increases.
Leveling up character will increase their Max HP, ATK, DEF, and bonus stats. We advise farming materials for the characters when you explore, which will benefit you later in the game. Ascending a character will unlock their character level cap and gradually increase their stats.

Co-Op
Yes, Genshin Impact supports cooperative multiplayer, and it is cross-platform. In Co-Op, you can join with three other players for a total of four-player parties and fight different domains and bosses or complete events. A player needs to reach Adventure Rank 16 to unlock Co-Op mode and join their friends. A player can act as a host, and others can join the world to take part in events.
Quests
In Genshin Impact, there are various quests a player can encounter. The main and most important is the main story called Archon Quests. Besides the Archon Quests, there are Story quests, Hangouts, World quests, and Event quests.
Artifacts
Genshin Impact’s Artifact system makes up the core of your character’s combat abilities. Artifacts are accessories equipped to characters to gain bonus stats. In Genshin Impact, each character has five different slots for artifacts. You can equip one artifact per slot. The five artifact slots are Flower of Life, Plume of Death, Sands of Eon, Goblet of Eonothem, and Circlet of Logos.
Flower of Life increases HP as the main stat.
Plume of Death increases ATK as the main stat.
Sands of Eon randomly increases ATK%, DEF%, HP%, Energy Recharge, or Elemental Mastery as the main stat.
Goblet of Eonothem randomly increases Elemental DMG Bonus, ATK%, DEF%, HP%, or Elemental Mastery as the main stat.
Circlet of Logos randomly increases CRIT Rate, CRIT DMG, ATK%, DEF%, HP%, Healing Bonus, or Elemental Mastery as the main stat.
You can only slot Flower of Life artifacts in the Flower of Life slot, not in other slots. The same rules apply to the other artifacts and slots. You can level up your artifacts to get more sub-stats and increase your main stat.
The only way to level up an artifact is by sacrificing other artifacts. The more artifacts you collect, the more you’ll be able to upgrade your existing artifacts.
We recommend farming for artifacts after reaching Adventure Rank 45 because Domains will drop at least one 5-star on every run.
Talents and Constellations
Talents are special skills and abilities that characters possess in Genshin Impact. Each character has three combat and three passive talents. A player needs to level up talents to increase the character’s abilities. It would help if you increased talent levels because they will affect how to play the character. Each character prioritizes different talents they rely on, so it is important to take note and level them up accordingly.
We recommend leveling up the Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst of your main characters to help you in combat and exploration.
Constellations are passive abilities unlocked when getting duplicate characters when you wish on banners. Constellations act as a character’s skill tree in Genshin Impact. With each constellation, your character will unlock different abilities that will increase their abilities or level up their Elemental Skill or Burst. Constellations are good for every character in Genshin Impact.
Wish System
We previously mentioned that Genshin Impact is a Gacha game, meaning you will get most of your characters and weapons from the banners. There are three types of Wish Banners in Genshin Impact; Character Event Wish banner, Weapon Event Wish banner, and Standard Wish banner.
Each update arrives with a new Character and Weapon Event banner that lasts around three weeks, followed by another Character and Weapon event wish banner. On the other hand, the Standard Wish banner is permanent. To roll on the Event Banner, players will need Wishes obtained from quests, events, and trading primogems.

This can be done using ‘Intertwined Fate’ and ‘Acquaint Fate’, and it is best to open ten at a time as it guarantees your chance for a 4-star pull. If a player has not gotten a 4-star item in nine wishes on a banner, they are guaranteed to get a 4-star or higher rarity item from the tenth wish.
If a player does not win a 5-star item in 89 rolls on a banner, the 90th wish will be a guaranteed 5-star item. Players can get lucky and get a 5-star item pretty early on the banner as well.
If the player rolls on the Event Wish banners and does not get the featured item within 90 pulls (they get another 5-star character or weapon), they will get the featured 5-star character on their next 90 pulls. Genshin Impact players call it the 50/50. However, you can get any 5-star weapon or character featured in the banner from the Standard Wish banner. It is not guaranteed which 5-star character or weapon you will get.
Another banner is The Beginner’s Wish, a novice wish banner with no time limit, and it is available for players who start their journey in Teyvat. The Beginner’s Wish will expire automatically when a player makes a total of 20 wishes. Players are guaranteed Noelle, a Geo claymore character from the Beginner’s Wish banner, but they can get other characters and weapons as well.
The main currency used for a wish is Primogems. Each wish will require 160 Primogems. From Paimon’s Bargains shop, you can exchange your Primogems for Intertwined Fate or Acquaint Fates. Intertwined Fate is used for Character and Weapon Event wish banners, and Acquaint Fates is used for Standard wish banner.
Resin Management
If you are starting in Genshin Impact, it is really important how you spend your Resin in-game. Resin is used to claim rewards from World Bosses, Ley Lines, and Artifact Domains. Original Resin replenishes every 8 minutes, and it is capped at 160, so it is best to use them to farm efficiently. During the early game, it is recommended to use the Resin to level up characters by claiming world boss drops and farm Mora, EXP books from gold and blue ley lines.
Fragile Resin that you get from doing quests and leveling Adventure Ranks can be used to restore Original Resin. A single Fragile Resin can restore 60 Original Resin. You should save Fragile Resin for the late game to farm for Talent materials and Artifacts.
That’s it for the Genshin Impact Beginner’s Guide. We hope you have a fun experience playing Genshin Impact!
