Mushrooms in Minecraft can be found in different varieties. Such as

  • Red Mushroom
  • Brown Mushroom
  • Huge mushrooms

Huge Mushroom is not necessarily a separate variation but rather an upgrade of the Red and Brown ones. There is also a rare cow variant of a mushroom. Mushrooms are normally used for making food stew, crafting other ingredients (fermented spider eye), and building structures (blocks from Huge Mushrooms). 

Where to find Mushrooms

Mushrooms are generally found in Dark areas, that is, areas with light levels of 12 or less. Mushrooms are mainly found in caves and deep, dark forests. You could also find them in the Nether biome alongside other fungus.

Now, talking about growing Mushrooms, they can grow on any block with low light, but it is preferred you grow them in podzol or mycelium dirt. 

Mycelium: Found on Mushroom Islands.

Podzol: Found in Old-Growth taigas and bamboo Jungle Biomes.

How to grow Mushrooms

Now, to grow small mushrooms, such as Red or Brown mushrooms, all you need are a dark place and some podzol or mycelium blocks. Plant some and wait out as they will start growing on their own without needing any water. After a while, they will start spreading to other blocks and grow on their own.

To grow Huge Mushrooms, you will need to place 7X7 blocks of podzol or mycelium in a room that is 7 blocks tall. After that, plant any mushroom on it and apply Bonemeal to turn it into a Huge Mushroom.
