Best Winston Skin in Overwatch 2022: Ranking all the skins from Worst to Best

Here we will be ranking the best skins of our favorite banana-loving jump pack hero, Winston.

Winston was a test specimen in Horizon Lunar Colony supervised by Dr. Harold Winston. The doctor along with other scientists ran experiments on gorilla test subjects, one of which was Specimen 28 who developed extraordinary intellect with gene therapy. But one day, there was a violent uprising by the other specimens which led to all the scientists being killed. Finding no reason to stay back, specimen 28 took the name of Winston and returned to Earth.

Winston is a dive tank in Overwatch utilizing his Jump pack to cover large distances in a short time. He also has a deployable Barrier Shield and his primary weapon is a Tesla Cannon. Winston has received a lot of cosmetic items from Blizzard and he has a plethora of regular skins along with Seasonal event skins he can choose from. These skins can be earned by opening loot boxes, purchasing from the in-game store, and completing challenges.

Overwatch has 6 Seasonal events throughout the year: Summer Games, Lunar New Year, Overwatch Archives, Anniversary, Halloween Terror, and Winter Wonderland. Skins that are unique to an event can only be unboxed from that specific events’ loot box and also be purchasable from the store during the runtime of that event. Earning an event loot box is the same as earning a regular loot box. it just needs to be earned during the ongoing event.

Top 10 Best Winston skins in Overwatch

With so many skins released for our favorite dive tank, we will pick out our top 10 favorite skins. In this list, we will be only listing skins that are available in loot boxes or can be purchased from the in-game store and won from Challenge events. We will be including the default skins that are always available as well as the skins that are available from Seasonal events as well as limited-time Challenges.

We did not include Overwatch League skins as they require a premium currency called OWL Tokens which need to be purchased or earned in a separate method.

10. Horizon (Epic)

The Horizon skin is an Epic tier skin that can be purchased from the in-game store for 250 credits or opened from a regular loot box.

The name Horizon refers to Horizon Lunar Colony, where Winston was born and acquired his superhuman intelligence. This skin features him in a Gray-Yellow space suit with a yellow recolor of his basic gun.

9. Ancient Bronze (Epic)

The Ancient Bronze skin can be purchased from the in-game store for 250 credits or opened from a seasonal event loot box. This skin is available to purchase during Lunar New Year.

This skin features Winston in a green theme with ancient Chinese carvings. His weapon is also of the same them.

8. Undersea (Epic)

Winston’s Undersea skin can be bought from the in-game store for 1000 credits or opened from a regular loot box. It is a legendary tier skin and features Winston in Diving gear.

His armor is in an orange theme and his booster packs are in the shape of oxygen tanks. His Tesla cannon is in the shape of a torpedo.

7. Explorer (Legendary)

The Explorer skin is a Legendary skin that can be purchased from the store for 1000 credits. It is a non-event skin meaning it can be acquired from regular loot boxes and bought from the store at any time.

This skin shows Winston clad in Safari gear. He is dressed up as a tour guide, complete with a large backpack, binoculars, and the classic mustache.

His weapon also appears in the form of long heavy bags along with a tent water canister and more.

6. Catcher (Legendary)

Catcher is a Legendary skin for Winston that can be purchased from the in-game store for 1000 credits. It is an event skin which means it can only be purchased during Summer games or opened from seasonal event loot boxes.

The catcher is a position in baseball and his role is to stand behind the batter and receive the ball. Like the name, Catcher Winston is also clad in baseball gear and has cool shades on.

His weapon is in the form of a large sports bag of the fictional company “Meteor” used to carry all sorts of baseball equipment and gear.

5. Werewolf (Legendary)

Werewolf is a Legendary Tier skin and it can be purchased from the in-game store for 1000 credits. However, it is an event skin and is only available for purchase during Halloween Terror. It can also be opened from the event loot box.

The skin features Winston as a ferocious werewolf who looks as though he broke free from shackles. He has thick brown fur, a ripped flannel shirt, and long sharp claws. He also has a unique voice line for his ultimate.

4. Specimen 28 (Legendary) ar

Winston’s Specimen 28 is a Legendary Tier skin and it can be purchased for 1000 credits. However, it is an event skin and is only available for purchase during Overwatch Archives. It can also be opened from the event loot box.

Specimen 28 was the name given to Winston back when he was in the Lunar colony base. Back then he was a gorilla test specimen and he developed high intelligence with the help of gene therapy. He was under the supervision of Dr. Harold Winston, who was like a father figure to him.

The weapon appears to be a prototype model of his Tesla cannon with Subject 28 written on the side.

3. Wukong (Legendary)

Wukong is a Legendary tier skin for Winston and it can be purchased for 1000 credits or opened from a loot box. Since it is an event skin, it can be bought from the in-game store during Lunar New Year or unboxed from an event loot box.

Wukong or Sun Wukong is one of the main characters in the fictional Chinese novel, Journey to the West. His name translates to Monkey King and he is well known as the Trickster God possessing superhuman powers.

Sun Wukong uses a magical staff called the “Nyoi Bo” or Power Pole. It was initially a useless Iron column 20 feet in length, was as thick as a barrel, and had the weight of thirteen thousand five hundred cattle. When Wukong held it he wished that it was of a manageable size. Then after emitting heavenly light, it turned into a staff just slightly taller than him and had the thickness of a rice bowl. It had gold rings on each end and had the inscription “The Compliant Golden-Hooped Rod”

For his skin, Winston looks like the bald Rhesus monkey that Wukong is based on. His weapon also appears in the same theme as the one Sun Wukong uses.

2. Gargoyle (Legendary)

Gargoyle Winston is a Legendary Tier skin and it can be purchased for 1000 credits. However, it is an event skin and is only available for purchase during Overwatch Anniversary. It can also be opened from the event loot box.

The skin features Winston in a sinister Gargoyle theme. His body looks as though it is an animated statue with broken horns and orange glowing eyes. His weapon is a broken piece of a cathedral roof where gargoyles were usually seen in Gothic Europe.

1. Yeti (Legendary)

At #1 we have Yeti which is a Lengendary tier skin. It can be purchased from the store for 1000 credits or opened from a loot box. Since it is an event skin it can be purchased during Winter Wonderland or opened from an event loot box.

The Yeti is a mythical animal popularized in Himalayan folklore known to have inhabited those regions in Asia. It is also referred to as the Abominable Snowman in Western culture.

For his Yeti skin, the developers did an amazing job portraying Winston as the beast. He has thick white fur, is covered in snow, and has giant teeth. His weapon appears to be a makeshift tesla cannon made with wood and powered by a generator. Overall the amazing details and how the Yeti suits Winston is what made this skin rank #1 in our list.

BONUS: Flying Ace (Overwatch League Legacy Skin)

To commemorate London’s Spitfire’s amazing run in the Overwatch League 2019. Flying Ace Winston is a Legendary Legacy skin and it was available for purchase with 200 League tokens.

This skin features Winston in London Spitfire’s theme, with orange and teal colors and his armor resembling a Spitfire Fighter plane. He has aviator goggles on and his jump pack resembles the wings and propeller of the aircraft.

BONUS: Blizzcon 2017 (Epic Legacy Skin)

To celebrate Blizzcon 2017, Blizzard announced a variety of in-game goodies included with the virtual ticket, one of which is an Epic tier skin for Winston.

This skin features Winston with a pale face and modern armor in a black-blue theme, showing many similarities to Raynor’s armor who is a popularized figure in the Blizzard universe.

This skin was a one-time event exclusive, meaning if you haven’t got it yet, there is no scope of getting it again in the future.

Best Winston skin with the Golden Gun

Golden guns look good on a lot of heroes but they stand a lot on Winston. Since he wields a huge Tesla Cannon, the golden weapon looks especially good with him.

Of all his skins, the Golden Weapon wielded by Wukong looks by far the best. The gold body of the gun matches perfectly with the gold rings and glowing scripture. “The Compliant Golden-Hooped Rod” here turns into “The Compliant Golden Rod” which in our opinion ties into the theme perfectly.

The Rare tier of Winston skins costs 75 credits each and is also commonly attainable in loot boxes. They feature basic recolors of the original skin in a single color. Most of the players who are new to the game and like to play Winston will find themselves starting out with purchasing a Rare skin for him.
