Welgun in one of the strongest S.M.Gs in Warzone. Taking gunfights in Rebirth Island and Caldera will be a walk in the park with this weapon. Here’s an in-depth guide to creating the perfect loadout for Welgun.
Close-range gunfights with S.M.G.s in Rebirth Island and Caldera Iron Trials are part of Warzone’s current meta. Welgun fits every checkbox for the perfect S.M.G. in Warzone Season 5 Last Stand. The Welgun is a superior gun; it is an excellent choice for rush playstyle, especially playing in and out of cover on the move.
With February 3rd update for Warzone, the Welgun was nerfed. Although it wasn’t a vital nerf, a bug caused the Welgun to overperform in some specific situations. The nerf did not affect its popularity amongst players. The weapon is in a sweet spot, to begin with. Any future nerfs or buffs might shift its position in the meta.
The Welgun has a similar fire rate to the MP40, both being S.M.G.s from Vanguard’s weapon pool. However, the Welgun has the fastest time to kill in its category. It shreds players in close range with its high fire rate and damage output. The Welgun adjusting itself to the meta of Warzone finally gave the MP40 a solid competition.
How to unlock the Welgun in CoD Warzone
The Welgun is a part of Call of Duty: Vanguard’s weapon pool and can be unlocked by completing a simple challenge.
In Multiplayer (Vanguard):
Get 10 kills with an S.M.G. while aiming down sights in a single match fifteen times.
Get 10 A.D.S. kills with S.M.G.s in a single match fifteen times.
Get five rapid critical kills with an S.M.G. during 50 different portal objectives.
The challenge is comparatively hard to complete. A helpful tip to unlock it faster is playing the Plunder game mode in Warzone and leaving after completing the match. The challenge requires players explicitly to play through the full match for the challenges to count. Plunder is an easier way to unlock this weapon because it has active respawn enabled. Using S.M.G.s from Vanguard would be safer if other assault rifles did not count towards the challenge.
Best Welgun Loadout
- Muzzle: Recoil Booster
- Barrel: 320mm SA Shrouded
- Optic: Slate Reflector
- Stock: Removed Stock
- Underbarrel: M1915 Steady
- Magazine: 7.62 Gorenko 40 Round Mags
- Ammo Type: Subsonic Point
- Rear Grip: Taped Grip
- Perk 1: Acrobatic
- Perk 2: Quick
Recoil Booster is a must for all Vanguard guns. It increases the fire rate while slightly reducing accuracy. 320mm S.A. Shrouded barrel offers improved accuracy, control, and flinch resistance while reducing scope sway and gun bob. However, it reduces aim down sight, movement, and sprint to fire speed.
For optic, Slate Reflector is the better option. It is a small rectangular sight that provides 1.35x magnification and precision sight picture. As for the stock, Removed Stock is the best option for faster movements, making rush gunfights easier, providing movement speed, and increasing sprint to fire speed while increasing initial firing recoil.
As for perks, the first choice of perk is Acrobatic. It increases movement speed and sprinting move speed. The second perk is Quick; it slightly increases sprint speed while wielding the weapon. Taped Grip provides better flinch resistance and accuracy during sustained fire. M1915 Steady Underbarrel provides better recoil control and accuracy while reducing hip-fire accuracy.
7.62 Gorenko 40 Round Mags is a huge magazine; it provides increased ammunition and increases bullet penetration, damage, velocity, and range. However, it reduces movement speed, recoil control, accuracy, and aim down sight speed. Subsonic is the choice of ammunition that does increase damage to limbs with a decreased damage range.
Best Equipment & Perks for Welgun Loadout
- Secondary: Cooper Carbine (Vanguard) or Swiss K31 (Black Ops Cold War)
- Tactical: Stim (Modern Warfare), or Heartbeat Sensor (Modern Warfare)
- Lethal: Throwing knives (Modern Warfare), or Claymore (Modern Warfare)
- Perk – 1: Quick Fix, or E.O.D
- Perk – 2: Overkill
- Perk – 3: Amped, or Combat Scout
Quick Fix is the ideal perk for players constantly engaging in gunfights, enabling health regeneration when an enemy is killed. Opting for E.O.D. is also feasible to take less damage from non-killstreak explosives and fire.
Overkill as the second perk is a must; players can carry an extra primary weapon in the secondary slot. Pairing Cooper Carbine or Swiss K31 with this S.M.G. will make the loadout more potent, and the secondary will help ease handling both long to mid-distance gunfights. Our Cooper Carbine loadout focuses on a long-range assault rifle build.
To swap between the weapons faster, Amped is the go-to. Faster switching between weapons will help in getting an edge over other players. Combat scout briefly highlights the whole team when an enemy player is shot.
As for tactical, stim gives an instant health regeneration upon use. Heartbeat sensor can help track other players roaming nearby and plan the next gunfight strategy. Throwing knives as lethal can be a backup in a close gunfight; it has a one-shot potential on players with a minimal level of armor. Moreover, immediately throwing a knife will eliminate the player regardless of the range it’s thrown from after downing a player. Proximity mine can be opted out for throwing knives to watch flank when stationary.

Other Alternatives to the Welgun in the Current Meta
In the current meta, other alternatives to Welgun are MP40 (Vanguard) and PPSh-41 (Vanguard). MP40 is an S.M.G.; it is a hip-fire monster in close range and, in the same way, also performs as a mid-range support weapon. PPSh-41 is also a solid choice with a high fire rate, and it has a very low time to kill in close-range gunfights. Check out our loadout builds for both guns to make the best Warzone loadout.
