VALORANT is one of the most popular tactical FPS games in 2022 and as a beginner, here are the best agents that can help you get started in the game.
The game revolves around characters known as Agents. There are a total of 18 Agents released in the game so far and each of them has their own unique abilities. Based on the nature of these abilities, agents are also classified into certain roles.
VALORANT Agent Classes
Duelist: They are the front-line attackers, the ones charging into the site with flashes and other abilities set on getting frags. The duelist’s main job is to clear space for their team and in turn, they are often the ones to die first. Most duelists have some form of regenerating or area contesting abilities that ensure that they maximize their damage output and keep on fragging.
Initiator: They are the agents who are primarily focused on gathering information. On the attacking side, they can help find out the location of the enemies and flash/stun them to contest the space. On the defensive side, they can find out where the enemies are about to strike from and call in ally rotations to help.
Controller: They are the agents which specialize in cutting off vision and controlling angles. They can block off advantageous positions of the defending opponents and set up their own team to easily enter into the site. They also have supportive abilities helping teammates take control of a site or abilities to slow down an enemy’s push. A typical attack is almost impossible to execute without an ally controller putting down timely smokes or walls that block the enemy vision.
Sentinel: They are Agents primarily focused on defense. Their kit is designed to slow down enemy attackers with walls, slow fields, trip wires, etc. A good sentinel can hold down a site from enemy rushes and buy time for ally rotations to arrive. Also, a sentinel can take good map control which is another important aspect of the game. Their abilities are specifically designed to defend against enemy pushes and map control.

5 Best VALORANT Agents for Beginners in 2022
Phoenix is a duelist and one of the more prominent faces in VALORANT. He is an extremely self-sufficient fragger with a very useful kit. His Curveball flashes are very strong and hard to dodge making them suitable to enter into sites and hold off enemy pushes. His Hot hands ability is perfect for clearing out cheeky positions while attacking and holding off choke points while defending. It can also be used as a self-heal ability which comes in handy after duels.
His Blaze ability can help provide temporary cover as well as split a site making it easier to clear one angle at a time. It also doubles up as a self-heal ability. His ultimate is one of the best attacking ultimate in the game as it gives him an extra life enabling him to rush into a site without any worry as well as his teammates can follow behind and get trade kills.
We think Phoenix is the most balanced duelist in the game with flashes, smoke/wall, and self-healing abilities along with a versatile ultimate ability.
Sova is an initiator and his abilities are focused on info gathering. His Recon Bolt ability is extremely strong in acquiring intel. As it is on a cooldown, it can be used multiple times in a game, and it’s free. Although it requires some practice for his arrow lineups in custom games to get right, the payoff is immense. One mistake beginner players make with Sova is either learning too many lineups or learning none at all. You only need to learn just about 4-6 lineups per map, one for attacking and one for defense, two for each site. AverageJonas and Snapiex have amazing tutorials to get started.
Sova’s Shock darts are also very useful in dealing damage to enemy rushes and clearing out angles. A popular use of the ability on the attacking side is in post-plant situations as with a lineup they can be fired from a safe distance and will kill any defender trying to defuse the spike. After the initial 4-6 lineups, these are the ones players should learn, one for each site.
His Owl drone ability is also very useful in scouting and information gathering. It can be used to scout an area to know the enemy’s whereabouts before mounting an attack. His ultimate ability Hunter’s Fury is extremely potent and can clear out angles and prevent enemies from contesting an area. Its best used in conjunction with Owl Drone after tagging an enemy for an easy frag. Because of all these reasons, Sova is regarded as the best agent in the entire game.
Brimstone is a Controller agent and is a very simple yet effective agent in the game. His sky smokes can cut off enemy lines of visions and they are very simple to use as no lineups are necessary. Another advantage of his smokes is that he has 3 of them and can use all 3 at the same time, if necessary. His Stim beacon ability increases the rate of fire for his team giving them the edge in gunfights. His Molotov can stop enemy pushes in their tracks and also clear out cheeky positions while attacking. Another skillful use of this ability is using it post-plant to prevent defenders from defusing it from a safe distance. Lineups are necessary in most cases but the result is worth the effort.
His orbital strike is also a very strong ultimate in the game. Beginners might think it is for frags but its main purpose is to deny map control. And any frags in the process are definite bonuses. It’s mainly used to clear out well-defended areas on the attack, and on defense, it’s used to deny plants and clear out angles during retakes.
Sage is one of the most popular Agents in the game and extremely beginner-friendly. She can use her Barrier Orb ability to construct a wall to block out chokes on the defending side. On the attacking side, she can use her wall to close off flanking routes to protect her team and deter retakes. She can also use her Slow Orb to halt enemy pushes and restrict their movement. It can be used right after her wall is broken can buy a lot of time for her team to rotate.
Her Healing Orb ability can heal teammates and herself which provides a lot of sustain to her team. Her ultimate ability is Resurrection which can revive a fallen teammate with full health. This ability can easily turn the tide of battle with a number advantage.
For any beginner team, we think Sage is indispensable because of the defense and sustain she can provide to a team.
Killjoy is a Sentinel agent and is a very strong defensive agent. Her Turret ability lets her set up a turret that covers a huge area providing map control. Her Alarmbot is extremely useful in detecting the enemy’s presence and making them vulnerable. It can also be used on the attacking side to protect her team from enemy flanks.
Her Nanoswarm ability is also a very strong defensive ability as they provide a lot of damage deterring or even killing the enemy attackers. On the attacking side, this ability can be used to clear out cheeky positions and can also be used in post-plant situations to prevent the defending team from defusing the spike with the help of simple lineups.
Overall she is a very easy-to-learn hero and for beginner games, the enemies will have quite the trouble facing off against a well-placed turret as well as dealing with her other abilities.
Who is the Easiest Agent?
For beginners, the Agents we would recommend are Sage and Phoenix. Sage’s abilities are very easy to use and very beneficial in holding enemy pushes and flanks. Her sustain abilities can also turn the tide of battle and keep low hp allies topped up to take further duels.
Phoenix is very strong on the attacking side with his reliable flashes and flame wall. He can take fights with ease and can also heal himself in between skirmishes. His ultimate ability is almost certain to break through most defenses and overall a very balanced agent. Just make sure to call out your flashes to avoid flashing teammates.
Another alternative is Reyna and what makes her suitable for beginners is the ability to heal after every kill. Although recent nerfs along with her limited kit made us not include her in the top 5, this in no way means that she is not a viable pick. Anyone with prior fps experience or decent aim can find themselves top fragging with Reyna.
How to Unlock a New agent?
All the Agents in VALORANT are free to unlock. 5 Agents: Brimstone, Jett, Sage, Phoenix, and Sova are unlocked at the beginning. A further 2 agents can be unlocked instantly by finishing the introduction missions.
After that, agents work on a contract system. Every agent has a contract of level 1-10. A contract has to be activated to start leveling it up for the specific agent. XP earned while a contract is activated will pool the XP into that specific Agent’s contract and level it up. At contract level 5, the agent is unlocked.
XP can be earned by doing daily and weekly missions as well as playing matches. Make sure to check your daily missions on the top left of the menu. They can also be seen in-game on the pause screen as well.
