Best Genshin Impact 5-Star Characters: Ranking All the Characters in 2021

Here we will be listing all the 5-Star characters currently available in Genshin Impact, and provide an opinionated ranking of them all based on their strength and other attributes.

Genshin Impact is a free-to-play open-world action role-playing game developed and published by Chinese videogame studio miHoYo. The beautifully crafted game features stunning visuals and battle mechanics that make use of elemental magic and weapons of varying kinds. As of 2021, the game has garnered an average active monthly player base of nearly 30 million people.

As of 2021, there are over 30 playable characters in the game, including the Traveler chosen at the start of the game. These characters can be distinguished based on their roles and abilities. These characters are then further ranked in terms of Rarity as 3, 4, or 5 Stars. Here we will be breaking down all the 5-Star characters players can obtain during their journey, and rank them based on their unique attributes. Furthermore, we will also guide you in how to obtain 5-Star characters in Genshin Impact.

Best 5-Star Characters in Genshin Impact (A Complete Tier List)

  • Best (S-tier) : Ganyu, Venti, Hu Tao, Xiao, Zhongli
  • Good (A-tier) : Jean, Dulic, Klee, Mona, Keqing, Ayaka, Tartaglia (Childe), Eula, Kazuha, Albedo
  • Average (B-tier) : Traveller, Qiqi

Given the fact that they’re all characters with a 5-Star Rarity, it’s safe to say that they each have their own unique strengths. However, characters like Ganyu, Venti, Kazuha, Hu Tao, Xiao, and Zhongli are the strongest contenders. For starters, Ganyu excels at both ranged and elemental attacks. Moreover, while her Elemental Skill can taunt enemies, she also has a utility passive that increases the Critical Rate of Charge Attacks. Furthermore, she is able to deal insane ice damage to multiple enemies at once and can even deliver one-shot kills – making her the best offensive player in Genshin Impact.

On the other hand, Venti’s Elemental Bursts deal damage, absorb elements, and are perfect for clearing mobs. Hu Tao can deliver consistent critical hits with her Pyro attacks. Xiao is also one of the best offensive players in Genshin who can deliver multiple hits and deal massive AOE Damage using Plunge Attacks, outperforming heavy-hitters like Dulic and Tartaglia. Zhongli, on the other hand, is the best support character as his shield is almost indestructible and can debuff surrounding enemies.

Other notable mentions belonging to A-tier are Klee, Dulic, Jean, Mona, and Tartaglia. Like Hu Tao, Klee can also deliver continuous AOE damage and has strong Pyro attacks. Jean, on the other hand, is a 5-Star Healer with Instant AOE Healing skills. Dulic is a Pyro user whose attacks have high damage output that can break most shields. Mona is also a strong offensive player who can deal High Burst Damage and apply debuffs like Wet Status to multiple enemies. Moreover, Tartaglia is also a hydro user like Mona but uses a bow for ranged attacks.

How to Unlock 5-Star Characters in Genshin Impact

While Genshin Impact is indeed free-to-play, it doesn’t necessarily mean that players can enjoy the game and all it has to offer without needing to spend a single buck. The game allows players to obtain 5-star characters through two methods:

  • Method 1 – Using the Gacha (Gambling) Based Wish System
  • Method 2 – Spend Money to buy Primogems for spending on Wish/Banners

Primogems are Genshin Impact’s in-game premium currency that can be obtained through story progression, completing in-game tasks, or clearing Floors 9 to 12 of the Spyral Abyss, all of which require extensive grinding. Or you can shell out some cash to buy Primogems more easily. The $0.99 pack contains 60 Primogems, whereas the $99.99 pack contains 6,480 Primogems.

Once you have gathered enough Primogems, this currency can be used to purchase Wishes or Banners that may unlock a 5-star character or weapon. However, the odds of obtaining a 5-star character without spending any money are very slim as most drops are 3 to 4-star characters or equipment. Moreover, Genshin Impact often holds Limited-time Character Event Wishes where players get the chance to obtain limited edition 5-star characters.

The chance of obtaining a 5-star character or weapon on the first draw is less than 1%, or 0.6% to be exact. However, the player is guaranteed a 5-star reward on their 90th wish if they fail to obtain any 5-star item or character on their first 89 consecutive tries. Moreover, if the player receives a 5-star item/weapon instead of their desired 5-star character, the next 5-star reward is guaranteed to be the promotional character. This means that the player will need to try Wishing a maximum of 180 times to obtain a 5-star character.

However, players have tried to find loopholes in the system and figure out other ways to obtain 5-star characters. One YouTuber, in particular, has revealed that if a player ‘sacrifices’ one of their characters, it increases their chance to obtain a 5-star character through Paimon’s bargains. And by sacrifice, we mean intentionally jumping off a high building and killing your character. By following this odd method, he was able to obtain two A-tier 5-star characters: Jean and Albedo.
