While this game offers a lot, one of its most fulfilling features is its Emissary system. Continue reading to find out what an Emissary is and how it works. Moreover, we will also go over how you can become an Emissary in Sea of Thieves; and lastly, the best Emissaries in the game.
What is Emissary
Even if you have only recently delved into the world of Sea of Thieves, you may have come across at least one of its various Trading companies – such as the Gold Hoarders, Merchant Alliance, Order of Souls, Sea Dogs, Reaper’s Bones, Athena’s Fortune, The Hunter’s Call, and the Bilge Rats. They work as different factions within the game – each upholding different values.
In addition to offering services such as trading your valuable treasures for Gold or Reputation, they will also sell you equipment, skins, ship cosmetics, and send you on purposeful Voyages with certain quests. However, that’s not all.
You can deepen your relationship with these Trading Companies by representing them as an Emissary in the sea. In other words, they will recruit you as one of their own, with your ship bearing their Sigil’s flag. In return, you shall be rewarded for the service you provide them. You along with your crew will need to work towards furthering the cause of the Trading company you are choosing to represent.
The Emissary System: How it Works
As a representative of a Trading company, you will need to put the company’s values at the heart of your actions. After all, players are rewarded and ranked based on how effectively they are representing their company.
You will be ranked as an Emissary based on a grading system that reflects your and your crew’s dedication to the company. If you reach Grade V of your Emissary Grade, it reflects the highest level of dedication on your part. There are a number of ways you can level up your Emissary Reputation.
Firstly, you will need to go on the Voyages your Trading Company sends you on and subsequently complete the quests. Other ways include picking up or displaying company-specific treasures on your ship. Furthermore, you can also advance your Emissary level by sinking a rival company’s crew ship. Not only that but completing world events will also level up your grade meter.
However, there are also some company-specific tasks you might need to do to level up your Emissary grade for a particular company. For example, killing pirates of a rival emissary will only reward you for Reaper’s Bones. As you level up, you will also be benefitting from a multiplier effect on rewards from the loot you cash in.
How to become an Emissary in Sea of Thieves
In order to become an Emissary in Sea of Thieves, you must collect an Emissary flag of the company you wish to join. Although there are 8 Trading Companies currently present in Sea of Thieves, you can only join 5 of them as an Emissary. They are the Gold Hoarders, Merchant Alliance, Order of Souls, Reaper’s Bones, and Athena’s Fortune. Here is how you can unlock the Emissary flag for each of these companies:
- Gold Hoarders – Purchase Emissary flag after reaching Reputation Rank 15 with the company.
- Merchant Alliance – Purchase Emissary flag after reaching Reputation Rank 15 with the company.
- Order of Souls – Purchase Emissary flag after reaching Reputation Rank 15 with the company.
- Reaper’s Bones – Purchase Emissary flag after reaching the company’s hideout at The Reaper’s Hideout.
- Athena’s Fortune – Collect Emissary flag from the Pirate Lord after obtaining the title of Pirate Legend.
Best Emissaries in Sea of Thieves
- Best (S-tier) : Reaper’s Bones
- Good (A-tier) : Order of Souls, Gold Hoarders
- Average (B-tier) : Merchant’s Alliance, Athena’s Fortune
Although you are free to join whichever faction serves the purpose of your gameplay, our top pick for the best Emissary is definitely Reaper’s Bones. It is hands down the best emissary faction you can join simply because of how rewarding it is to work for them. They are a hot-blooded faction that strives for bloodshed. As a result, they reward highly for killing Pirates of rival emissaries as well as sinking their ships.
This makes them a great emissary to serve for players who love engaging in PvP pirate ship battles. Not only that, with this faction, you can locate other emissaries upon reaching Grade V of your Emissary grade meter. This will give you a huge competitive advantage over other players in the sea. Furthermore, they also pay players handsomely for any loot sold – more so if it was stolen off of another player.
The Order of Souls, on the other hand, is also a great Trading company to work as an Emissary for. For example, you can level up your grade meter by killing Emergent Skeleton captains, Skeleton captains in Skeleton forts as well as Skeleton Lords. Moreover, sinking Skeleton ships of Skeleton Fleets and Ghost ships of the Burning Blade fleet will also be rewarded handsomely, as well as improve your grade level. Under them, you will be sent on Voyages that involve hunting down treasures known as bounty skulls.
