Next time when you launch FF16, master these abilities to get the high ground on the battlefield.
Guys like Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy don’t just wander here and there without any definite aim. He wants to sharpen his new blades, equip new armor, learn new abilities and skills, and, most of all, take revenge for his deceased father’s soul. Now that is a lot of responsibilities to bear for Clive. Moreover, he needs to polish his abilities to step on a new level.
Now, if you are new to this franchise or even a veteran, you already know the ways around here. Store up enough Ability Points and unlock new abilities; that is one of the main focuses of the whole franchise. However, there are certain abilities you need to put your priorities on since the beginning of the game till the end. Needless to say the importance of some certain skills over another one.
However, in Final Fantasy 16, you just need to keep your eyes open and have a sharp mindset to read your game. That will guide your way into choosing your ability that suits well with the gameplay and with the quests. And to help you with that, I will be showcasing some of the best abilities you can equip to ride on the battlefield like a true Rosfield. Hop in!

Burning Blade
- Learn cost: 25 AP
- Upgrade cost: N/A
- Master cost: 160 AP
Starting with the Blade that is on Fire. First of all, it has a pretty high damage output that can easily break enemy guards. And breaking an enemy’s guard eventually makes him vulnerable to damage. I would definitely utilize that situation. On top of that, you can even launch the enemies up in the air. That gives much more options like air attack.
I was a bit worried about the cooldown time. However, you can upgrade to reduce that significantly. Apart from these, I would like to get in touch with it every now and then.
Rift Slip
- Learn cost: 100 AP
- Upgrade cost: 700 AP
- Master cost: 1000 AP
To have control over time, Rift Slip can be an ace in your sleeve. By mastering this ability, you will be able to stop time for a brief amount of time. That leaves Clive and me with a wide area to perform multiple attacks. However, my main reason for choosing this one was that it could reduce the cooldown time of the other abilities. This, in term, left me to keep up with a constant chain of attacks.
However, from time to time, it can be a bit difficult to perform as there needs to be some strategies to be laid down before. And yes, with proper planning, you can even use Rift Slip as both as a defensive and offensive ability, as I did.
Swift Recovery
- Learn cost: 10 AP
- Upgrade cost: N/A
- Master cost: N/A
From the name recovery, you can already guess its true potential. Yes, it can recover; but what? Swift Recovery recovers the amount of time that Clive will get stunned by unfortunate events. Needless to say, this was a great lifesaver for me, and I can guarantee it can also be the same result for you. Moreover, you can even reposition yourself with this ability. Just make sure to master it so that the cooldown time gets reduced. That is the only thing holding its true potential.
As the name already suggested, you cannot use it in the mainstream battles as it doesn’t deal any damage. With that being said, as it needs an effective driver, you might get overwhelmed sometimes. But if properly used, it is a big turntable.
Satellite
- Learn cost: 100 AP
- Upgrade cost: 700 AP
- Master cost: 1000 AP
Satellite starts of reading the area. As it acts on high-area damage, I could hit multiple enemies at once. Moreover, the damage output was significantly higher than the others that I have talked about till now. With a bit of staggering, you can make your enemies more vulnerable to attacks.
However, as it is a projectile attack, chances are you will miss sometimes. Apart from this drawback, Satellite is quite a powerful card to use. Again, watch out for the cooldown as well.
Ignition
- Learn cost: 120 AP
- Upgrade cost: 525 AP
- Master cost: 1000 AP
This one is my fav to use against small groups. From doing a staggering high damage to breaking enemies’ defense, this ability is an all-rounder. Till now, I have found it best to clear out sudden waves of ambush. Moreover, you can even change direction in the mid-action. On top of that, I was able to use Ignition to set up some other abilities like Inferno.
Some drawbacks can be the high consumption of MP and the prolonged action time. Means once you have triggered Ignition, it takes several moves till it finishes. In the meantime, you will not be able to dodge any enemy attacks; to be precise, you will be technically vulnerable for a brief amount of time. To master this, keep up with the time, and release it just on the clock for a perfectly timed attack.
Aerial Blast
- Learn cost: 1540 APÂ
- Upgrade price: 2005 APÂ
- Master price: 4000 AP
Imagine being in a tight spot and getting swarmed by hoards of enemies. That is the place and time to set off Aerial Blast. In a moment, whisk the whole hoard up in the air by creating a tornado. Moreover, it will also guarantee you multiple hits at once.
There are drawbacks, of course. You cannot just blast off big guys just like that. Moreover, Aerial Blast raises another issue in the meantime. It can create a visual construction for you if the attack is not timed. Yes, I had to find it the hard way.
Wicked Wheel
- Learn cost: 120 APÂ
- Upgrade price: 525 APÂ
- Master price: 1000 AP
Now to unleash the true ace from the bag. Wicked Wheel is a true nightmare for your foes. Not only I juggled some of them, but I was also able to unleash multiple whirlwind attacks. It didn’t end there as it was followed with some more combos, amplifying the chaos. However, MP reserve wasn’t kind to me.
The hunger of Wicked Wheel for MP is truly wicked. Apart from that, it was worth up to that hype. However, what bugged me off most of the time was the timed attack for Wicked Wheel. If a single attack was missed, the consequences were severe as I was left wide open. As they say, cast the ace but prepare for a brace.
