Apex Legends’ leaked Anniversary Event will allow players to get an heirloom of their choice from the Heirloom Shop instead of a fixed one.
Heirlooms in Apex Legends are an ultra-rare set of cosmetic items for specific Legends. Heirlooms in Apex Legends have less than a 1% chance of dropping, so you can imagine the amount of luck needed to get one of these. But on the 500th Apex Pack, there is a guarantee to get 150 Heirloom shards. These heirloom shards can be used to buy the Heirloom of your choice from the Apex Legends heirloom shop.
New Heirlooms are introduced in each collection event, and players can unlock the Heirloom by collecting all 24 event items. So, this offers improved odds of getting an heirloom. But previous events had a problem where you could only get the newest heirloom from the event. That might soon change for the better as a new leak surfaces.

Season 8 Anniversary Collection Event is Different
During the previous Anniversary Collection Event, players could only get the new heirloom that was introduced in the collection event. This meant that players who only played the Legend associated with the event heirloom would become interested in spending money during the collection events. That’s just a bad business model, as Apex Legends is a free game, and Respawn makes money from cosmetic items.
So if only a fraction of the player base is interested in the cosmetic event, then that means the revenue generation is also small. But that might soon change, as new leaks suggest a change is coming in the Season 8 Anniversary Collection Event.
A renowned leaker in the Apex Legends community called Shrugtal has recently shared with us what this change might be. According to the leaker, players will now be awarded 150 heirloom shards instead of the new heirloom. With the heirloom shards, players can choose any heirloom of their choice from the heirloom shop. This will give all players interested in participating in the event a chance to earn their favorite Legend’s Heirloom.
This is still just a leak, so take it with a grain of salt, as we still don’t have any official announcements. But if the leak is true, then this is indeed a welcome change and will surely help to improve the quality of the Anniversary Event and increase player participation.

Update: Season 8 later featured the mentioned anniversary event, where Heirloom Shards were rewarded to players for collecting 24 items for half the price. So, the leaks were accurate.
